The English Chamber Orchestra announced that violist Lawrence Power, has been named Artistic Director from the 2016/17 season. Lawrence Power is much in demand as soloist. He is also Professor of Viola at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste.

Jaap Schröder

Spanish Association of Early Music Groups (GEMA) announced the second edition of their Awards. Violinist Jaap Schröder, who recently turned 90, is receiving the Honour Award, « as a recognition of his amazing, massive, intense and prolific career, and his dedication to teaching. » The Award Ceremony will take place at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid. In Leipzig wurde das Auswahlverfahren für einen neuen Thomaskantor als Nachfolger von Georg Christoph Biller überraschend gestoppt. Die zwei noch im Rennen verbliebenen Kandidaten, Clemens Flämig und Markus Teutschbein, hätten nicht vollends überzeugt, heißt es. Chinese conductor and pianist Xu Zhong has been named General Director of Shanghai Opera House. Zhong is also Principal Conductor of the Fondazione Arena di Verona in Italy.

The Scala Philharmonic has joined the international campaign to save the European Youth Orchestra, which the European Union does not want to fund anymore. The Milan based orchestra has written an open letter to the European Commissioner for Culture, Tibor Navracsics, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini and the president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, who is Honorary president of EUYO, asking that the European Union Youth Orchestra remains « one of our most important ambassadors, a powerful symbol of unity. »

Die deutsche Kulturstaatsministerin Monika Grütters (CDU) will sich für das von der Schließung bedrohte Europäische Jugendorchester stark machen.  Der Kulturministerrat müsse über eine Lösung sprechen, sagte die Politikerin am Freitag in Berlin. Das EUYO  sei ein « Symbol der kulturellen Vielfalt Europas ». Dem Orchester genau jetzt die Mittel zu streichen, sei das falsche Signal zum falschen Zeitpunkt. Die Bürokraten in Brüssel haben in der Folge eines Umkrempelns der kulturellen Subventionierung eine weitere Förderung abgelehnt.

Opéra Comique, Paris

As from the next season on, the Opéra Comique in Paris will have their own Maîtrise, a choir for young singers from 11 to 25. The activities will comprise a complete training in choir singing, acting and dancing.
