Bryn Terfel

British bass-baritone Bryn Terfel has broken an ankle in three places and will have surgery this week, the Lyric Opera of Chicago said in a statement announcing the cancellation of Terfel’s recital on Sunday. New York’s Carnegie Hall has also cancelled his recital set for 9 February. Terfel also stepped out of the upcoming Metropolitan Opera production of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman in March.

The International Classical Music Awards are celebrating this year their 10th anniversary. ICMA was created in 2010 as the successor of the MIDEM Classical Awards, formerly Cannes Classical Awards. The Siberian State Symphony Orchestra, scheduled to begin an eight-week-long U.S. tour by mid-January, was forced to cancel the first concerts of the tour. According to the local organizers U.S. immigration officials have denied entry to the symphony, which is made up of 81 musicians. No reasons were given by tour organizers, but they did say they hope to save some of the later dates on the tour which is set to last through the month of March. Read More →

Die Zahl der Musiker in Berufsorchestern sei zum ersten Mal seit der deutschen Wiedervereinigung wieder gestiegen, meldet die Deutsche Orchestervereinigung DOV. Deutschlandweit gibt es mit 9.766 Stellen insgesamt 20 mehr als bei der letzten Erhebung 2018. Damals wies die DOV-Statistik noch einen Abbau von 70 Stellen aus: « Im Jahr 2018 gab es bei den öffentlich finanzierten, regelmäßig spielenden Berufsorchestern 9.746 Stellen. Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, has been forced to cancel his participation in yesterday’s performance of The Flying Dutchman at the Bilbao Opera in Spain, after suffering a fall in which he broke his right foot. He was replaced by Moldovan bass-baritone Roman Ialcic, the opera house announced. Read More →

After a month and a half-long strike against pension reform, the Paris Opera started performing again on the weekend of 25 January. However, the unions warn that they remains mobilized « for the withdrawal of the bill ». During the strike, more than 70 shows have been cancelled. Ticketing losses amount to nearly 15 million euros.
