Russian conductor Semyon Bychkov, 69, has published a strong statement on the webpage of the Czech Philharmonic, the orchestra of which he is Music Director. Bychkov says: « Russian aggression against Ukraine and lies about it must stop before the rest of the world is engulfed in another war. We have no right to remain silent and watch history repeat itself as it did in 1956 and before, in 1968 and after. Those that bring death and destruction must be brought to justice and disappear in infamy. »

Jaakko Kuusisto

Finnish conductor, violinist and composer Jaakko Kuusisto died today in Oulu, Finland, at the age of 48. Kuusisto was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the summer of 2020 and despite surgery, his condition worsened at the beginning of this year and led to the musician’s death. Jaakko’s brother, Pekka Kuusisto, reported the death on social media. Read More →

The British mezzo-soprano Josephine Veasey died at the age of 91. Her career began in the late 1940s and ended it in 1982. Known for her interpretations of Wagner (Fricka – recorded in Salzburg under Herbert von Karajan for DG, Brangäne, Venus & Kundry) and Berlioz (Dido, Cassandra, Marguerite, Béatrice), Joséphine Veasey had a large repertoire. Der dreißigjährige Pianist Kit Armstrong gilt als besonders begabt. Mit fünf Jahren begann er Klavier zu spielen und zu komponieren, er studierte Komposition und Musik ebenso wie Physik, Biologie und Mathematik. Die amerikanische Sopranistin Judith Beckmann ist am Wochenende im Alter von 86 Jahren gestorben. 1935 in Jamestown (US-Bundesstaat North Dakota) geboren studierte sie an der University of Southern California und der Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Durch den Sieg bei einem Gesangswettbewerb  in San Francisco im Jahre 1961 erhielt sie ein Stipendium in Deutschland, wo sie 1962 am Nationaltheater Braunschweig debütierte. Read More →

The Brussels based Queen Elizabeth Competition has announced that the 2022 Cello Competition will take place from 9 May to 4 June, in Flagey and the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts (BOZAR). 152 cellists (aged 18 to 31) have applied. Migran Agadzhanyan

Armenian conductor, singer and pianist Migran Agadzhanyan has been named music director of the Perm Opera in Russia. Agadzhanyan, who turns 30 this year, is a graduate of the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in St. Petersburg. As tenor, he won the Second Prize in the Operalia Competition 2018.
