Pizzicato’s Remy Franck is in Ankara. As President of the International Music Awards, he is preparing the Award Ceremony and Gala Concert which take place next Saturday 28 March at the Bilkent Symphony Hall in the Turkish capital. The event is hosted by the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra. Due to travelling and meetings, the updating of the News section of the Pizzicato website may be not as consequent as usual. Am vergangen Samstag, 21. März, feierte die ukrainische Stadt Lviv (Lemberg) Johann Sebastian Bachs 330. Geburtstag im Rahmen des weltweit veranstalteten Events ‘Bach in the Subways’. Doch in Lviv beschränkte man sich nicht auf Bach-Musik in der Untergrundbahn, man veranstaltete ein regelrechtes Bach-Marathon in der Philharmonie, dem ‘House of Organ and Chamber Music’, dem Potocki Palast, Restaurants, Geschäften, im Freien… 24 Stunden lang wurde in Lviv in einem fort Bach gespielt. Mehr als 600 Musiker waren beteiligt.

Ein Reisebus der Tschechischen Philharmonie Prag ist im Anschluss an ein Konzert in Wien am Sonntagnachmittag in Österreich von der Straße abgekommen und sieben Meter in die Tiefe gestürzt. Von den 17 Insassen wurden drei Menschen, darunter der Fahrer, schwer verletzt, zehn weitere erlitten leichte Verletzungen und konnten die Klinik, in die man sie gebracht hatte, abends wieder verlassen. Die meisten Mitglieder der Tschechischen Philharmonie sind dem Unfall entgangen, weil mit dem Flugzeug unmittelbar weiter zu einem Konzerttermin nach Polen flogen, wo sie heute (23.März) ein Konzert beim Beethoven Festival in Warschau geben.

The Opera of Limoges/France will not renew the contracts of its ballet at the end of the current season. Eight dancers lose their jobs. The management says the money they will save will be used for the orchestra and the choir.

Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, an avant-garde company based in New York, is shut down. This was reported by the Observer. Created and financed by Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie, the company was active for 12 years. 16 dancers and some 10 administrative staff lose their jobs.

Due to a strike of parts of its employees, Radio France canceled the concert of its Philharmonic Orchestra yesterday evening at the new Philharmonie in Paris. However, the musicians were not on strike and neither was their conductor Myung-Whun Chung. They officially declared that the concert would take place. Yet, the management of the Philharmonie was closer to the management of Radio France than to the musicians and kept the doors of the building closed. But the Orchestra was not to be backed off. After the 100.000 Euro renovation of his office, Matthieu Gallet, CEO of the French Radio, has overtly spoken about possible ways to save money with both of the Radio’s orchestras. He currently sees three options: The so called National Orchestra (the one having Gatti as Music Director) could be brought into an autonomous structure, with part of its financing being assured by the Radio. He is also thinking about a merger of both orchestra, Gatti’s ‘National’ and Chung’s ‘Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France’ or of reducing the number of musicians.
