French conductor Frédéric Chaslin refused to conduct at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening, after the management denied his demand for a short commemoration of the victims of the terror attacks in France last week. According to an article in the Times of Israel, Chaslin had asked to speak to the audience and play the Israeli national anthem in honor of the 17 people killed in Paris, but was told this would upset the audience. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra hat unser langjähriger Mitarbeiter Alain Steffen soeben die Arbeit an einem Buchprojekt über das renommierte amerikanische Orchester begonnen. Um sein Konzept umzusetzen, wäre er froh, wenn die Pizzicato- Leser, die das ‘Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’ in den letzten fünf Jahren irgendwo in Europa oder Amerika im Konzert erlebt haben, diesen Fragenkatalog (bitte anklicken) beantworten und ihm zurück mailen könnten. Dem Orchester ‘Bergische Symphoniker’ droht die Insolvenz. Das meldet ‘RP online’. Ohne zusätzliche Finanzspritzen der Städte Remscheid und Solingen werde dem Orchester Mitte 2015 das Geld ausgehen. Der Fehlbetrag soll bei 400.000 Euro liegen. In beiden Rathäusern wird angeblich an einem Rettungsplan gearbeitet.

While examining people with absolute pitch, researchers at the Zurich University have detected a close link between two brain regions. In a news release by the University’s media desk, it is said that intensive research is being conducted at the University of Zurich’s Department of Neuropsychology with people who have ‘absolute pitch’ and, thus, are able to identify notes immediately without relying on a reference tone. British Allegri Quartet organized yesterday evening a moving tribute to the victims of the Charlie Hebdo terrorist massacre in Paris. An ensemble of over 150 string players gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square to play Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings. Almost 2,000 people attended the event.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic has announced a new project aimed at unifying the different El Sistema-like education programs across the United States. Together with the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado, the Bard College in upstate New York, the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Mass., and Venezuela’s FundaMusical, L.A. Philh is creating a national platform for youth orchestras. The three-year project will consist of regional orchestra camps in 2016 and a national festival in 2017. Participation in the camps will be free for students.

Salle Pleyel, Paris

Regardless of pending judicial procedures the Board of Cité de la Musique in Paris has granted the concession to run the concert hall Pleyel to Fimalac. Plans are to organize jazz, comedy, dance and song events at Pleyel, a hall of long classical tradition where no longer any classical concert is to take place in order to save the new philharmonic hall from competition. The new hall is a risky project since it is located far away from the homes of the traditional classical audience.
