German Conductor Kurt Masur died today in Greenwich, Conn., aged 88. The long-time Gewandhaus Kapellmeister, Music Director of the New York Philharmonic (1991-2002), Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (2000-2007), Chief Conductor of the Orchestre National de France (2002-2008), was born on July 18, 1927, in Brieg (Brzeg) then in the Silesian region of Germany. Weil Zubin Mehta seine privaten Pläne zu seinem 80. Geburtstag geändert hat, sagte er kurzerhand ein Konzert mit den Berliner Philharmonikern am 6. April 2016 ab. Damit das solistisch mit Daniel Barenboim (73) besetzte Konzert in ‘alten’ Händen bleibe, lud das Orchester den 80 Jahre alten Seiji Ozawa ein, der zwei Konzerte am 8. und 10. April 2016 dirigieren will. Seiji Ozawa leitete die Berliner zuletzt im Mai 2009.

Leopold Mozart

Für den 9. Internationalen Violinwettbewerb Leopold Mozart haben sich genau 120 Kandidaten angemeldet. Die meisten Bewerber kommen aus Südkorea (26). Deutschland steht mit 15 Anmeldungen an zweiter Stelle, gefolgt von Japan (13), die USA (11) und China (9). Nach der Auswahl der Vorjury werden dann ca. 60 bis 70 Teilnehmern im Mai 2016 in Augsburg antreten.

Die Insolvenz des Mecklenburgischen Staatstheaters Schwerin ist abgewendet. Das Bundesland Mecklenburg-Vorpoimmer überweist 1,2 Millionen Euro Soforthilfe, teilte Kultusminister Mathias Brodkorb (SPD) am heutigen Donnerstag mit. Das Land will zudem als Mehrheitsgesellschafter beim Theater einsteigen. Das Mecklenburgische Staatstheater Schwerin ist ein staatliches Fünfspartentheater mit u.a. Oper, Ballett und Konzert. Es veranstaltet die Schlossfestspiele Schwerin vor der Kulisse des Schweriner Schlosses.

Fired six months after taking his job in 2012 – while his contract was running over five years – Miguel Esteban, the former director of the Orchestre Suisse Romande (OSR) in Geneva received a compensation of 570,000 francs (€527.000), including 100,000 francs in moral damages. According to Swiss newspaper Le Temps, Esteban had asked for 1.8 million francs.

Plans to build a new concert hall in London have moved ahead. After the very positive conclusion of an official feasibility study and the proposal of a £280m budget, the City of London announced to donate the land at the site currently used by the Museum of London (next to the Barbican) and the government will spend £5m on initial designs and a business plan. The target is to raise £125m from philanthropists, with £185m coming from local and national government.

After a short lock-out, the 66 musicians of the Québec Symphony Orchestra and the band’s management have reached an agreement for a new contract of 5 years. The musicians agreed to a thin additional salary increase of 0.25% for the year 2019-2020, representing a total of $ 7,550 for the employer. This almost symbolic amount allows musicians to have their current salary at the end of the collective agreement, with some cuts before. After this success, no concert has to be cancelled. The planned concerts will take place today and Friday.

Following the resignation of Jean-Yves Ossonce, the mayor of the French city Tours appointed conductor Benjamin Pionnier, 38, as head of the Grand Théâtre and the Orchestra of the Region Centre-Val de Loire.
