Due to funding cuts and the denial by the Yucatan state government to cover the symphony orchestra’s payroll, the South-Mexican orchestra is in financial difficulties.  According to local press reports, the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra is struggling to get the state to fulfill its obligation to fund its meager budget.

The orchestra also is no longer able to use the big auditorium at the Teatro Peón which was badly damaged by a fire. It is now playing at the Palacio de la Música, a venue with less than half the capacity of the Peón.

The orchestra management says that other orchestras across Mexico are completely subsidized by their home states or a nearby university.
