Full of Grace – das Album mit Chormusik von James Woodhall gibt ein nie haltbares Versprechen ab. Mag man die Kompositionen des Amerikaners noch als korrekt bezeichnen, so stimmt in deren Interpretation kaum etwas.
Stimmung kommt selten auf, weil die vokale Umsetzung manches zu wünschen übrig lässt. Der Solo-Tenor verlässt sich vorwiegend auf die Kraft seiner Stimme, um auch die Höhen zu stemmen, die er reichlich bemüht erklimmt. Textinhalt und Expressivität laufen dabei vollkommen ins Leere.
Auch die beiden Chöre haben so ihre Schwierigkeiten mit der Intonation, was natürlich keine Hilfe für eine feine Klangbalance ist. Wenig Balance ist zudem in der Aufnahme zu erleben, wenn der Komponist am Klavier sich allzu oft in den Vordergrund spielt.
Derart bleibt die angekündigte Anmut natürlich auf der Strecke. Möge sie bei einem möglichen nächsten Versuch endlich im richtigen Glanz leuchten.
James Woodhall’s album, Full of Grace, is a collection of choral music that makes a promise it cannot keep. While the compositions of the American composer may be described as technically proficient, their interpretation leaves much to be desired.
There is rarely any atmosphere because the vocal realization leaves a lot to be desired. The solo tenor relies primarily on the power of his voice to reach the high notes, which he struggles to hit. In the process, the lyrics and expressiveness are completely lost.
The two choirs also struggle with intonation, which, of course, hinders achieving a fine balance of sound. The recording lacks balance as well, as the composer playing the piano often plays himself into the foreground.
As a result, the promised gracefulness falls by the wayside. Hopefully, it will shine in all its glory in a future attempt.
