Die amerikanische Cellistin Alisa Weilerstein hat Richard Blackford’s The Recovery of Paradise concerto for cello im Februar 2025 im Dvorak-Saal des Rudolfinums in Prag uraufgeführt. Blackford befasst sich darin mit den Folgen des Klimawandels, den das US-Regime als inexistent bezeichnet und daher auch dabei ist, alle Restriktionen bezüglich der Treibhauseffekte aufzuheben.
Der Komponist, weitsichtiger ist als die amerikanische Regierung, sagt: « Während ich mein Cellokonzert schrieb, las ich viele Artikel und Nachrichten über Klimaanomalien auf der ganzen Welt. Extreme Manifestationen der vier Elemente der Natur (Erde, Luft/Wind, Wasser, Feuer) wurden zu den Erzählungen für die ersten drei Sätze. Der letzte Satz, inspiriert von der Wiederherstellung der Stadt Paradise in Kalifornien, die 2018 durch Waldbrände zerstört wurde, feiert die Widerstandsfähigkeit des menschlichen Geistes angesichts der Tragödie. »
Der erste Satz heißt ‘The Devil Winds of Santa Ana’ und ist hektisch und dramatisch. Darauf folgt ein langsamer Satz, Cry The Scorched Earth, mit einer sehr nachdenklichen Atmosphäre.
Der dritte Satz, Rhyme and Rhythm of The Rain, bezieht sich auf die Überschwemmungen in sehr verschiedenen Ländern, Indien, USA, und beschreibt die Kraft des Wassers mit pulsierender, rhythmischer und aufgewühlter Musik.
Der vierte Satz des halbstündigen Konzerts, The Recovery Of Paradise, beginnt mit einer Art Lamento des Cellos und wird dann positiver, fast ätherisch, als wolle er den Wiederaufbau des kalifornischen Ortes Paradise mit dem himmlischen Paradies assoziieren.
Eine in allen Hinsichten exzellente und ausdrucksvolle Interpretation sowie eine ausgewogene und sehr präsente Tonaufnahme tragen dazu bei, dass dieses Cellokonzert beim Hörer einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlässt.
The American cellist Alisa Weilerstein premiered Richard Blackford’s The Recovery of Paradise concerto for cello in February 2025 in the Dvorak Hall of the Rudolfinum in Prague. In it, Blackford deals with the consequences of climate change, which the US regime describes as non-existent and is therefore also in the process of lifting all restrictions on greenhouse effects. The composer, who is more far-sighted than the American government, says: « While I was writing my cello concerto, I read many articles and news reports about climate anomalies around the world. Extreme manifestations of the four elements of nature (earth, air/wind, water, fire) became the narratives for the first three movements. The last movement, inspired by the recovery of the town of Paradise, California, which was destroyed by wildfires in 2018, celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the face of tragedy. »
The first movement is called ‘The Devil Winds of Santa Ana’ and is hectic and dramatic, followed by a slow movement, Cry The Scorched Earth, with a very reflective atmosphere.
The third movement, Rhyme and Rhythm of The Rain, refers to the floods in very different countries, India, USA, and describes the power of water with pulsating, rhythmic and agitated music.
The fourth movement of the half-hour concerto, The Recovery Of Paradise, begins with a kind of lament by the cello and then becomes more positive, almost ethereal, as if to associate the reconstruction of the Californian town of Paradise with the heavenly paradise.
An excellent and expressive interpretation in all respects as well as a balanced and very present sound recording contribute to the fact that this cello concerto leaves a lasting impression on the listener.
