Polish capital Warsaw will host a Penderecki Festival, 17–23 November 2013, marking the composer’s 80th birthday. With the participation of such stars as Anne Sophie Mutter, Julian Rachlin, Daniel Müller-Schott, Thomas Bauer, Yuri Bashmet, Claudio Bohórquez and conductors Valery Gergiev, Charles Dutoit, Lorin Maazel, Leonard Slatkin, Marek Janowski, Jesús López-Cobos, Jiří Bělohlávek and Lawrence Foster, the festival will be the highlight of the birthday celebrations.Krzysztof Penderecki  was born November 23, 1933 in Dębica. His 1960 avant-garde Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima for string orchestra brought him to international attention, and this success was followed by acclaim for his choral St. Luke Passion. Both these works exhibit novel compositional techniques. Since the 1970s Penderecki’s style has changed to encompass a post-Romantic idiom. As well as the works already mentioned, his compositions include four operas, seven symphonies and other orchestral pieces, a variety of instrumental concertos, choral settings of mainly religious texts, as well as chamber and instrumental works.
