Erst 15 Jahre nach ihrer Uraufführung erlangte die 3. Symphonie von Henryk Gorecki weltweite Popularität. Eine Aufnahme mit der London Sinfonietta katapultierte das Werk in die Pop-Charts. Klassik-Puristen rümpften daraufhin die Nase. Was in kommerziellen Hit-Listen oben mitspielt, kann prinzipiell nicht gut sein!
Mit diesem Vorurteil sahen sich der Komponist und seine Symphonie der Klagelieder wiederholt konfrontiert – außer vielleicht in seinem Heimatland, wo das Werk schon mehrmals eingespielt wurde. Eine letzte polnische Aufnahme entstand 2019 unter der Leitung von Goreckis Landsmann und Zeitgenossen Krzysztof Penderecki.
Nun haben sich Krzysztof Urbanski und die Warschauer Philharmoniker dieser formal ungewöhnlichen Symphonie angenommen – drei langsame Sätze in einer minimalistischen, nahezu ausschließlich auf vielfach geteilten Streichern ruhenden Klangsprache.
Die drei Sätze sind tranquillo – ruhig, überschrieben. Und derart gestaltet Krzysztof Urbanski dieses Werk: ein sanft dahin fließender Strom an Klängen, deren Farbenspiel man sich als Hörer nicht entziehen kann – und will. In dieses intensive, emotional einnehmende Spiel mischt sich das Timbre von drei unterschiedlichen Sopran-Stimmen. Krzysztof Urbanski ist hier ein feiner dramaturgischer Kniff gelungen. Er gibt den drei Klageliedern dadurch eine sehr individuelle, persönliche Note.
Diese Aufnahme widerlegt eindrücklich die vielen Vorbehalte gegen Goreckis 3. Symphonie. Krzysztof Urbanski und seine Musiker lassen uns teilhaben an einer besonderen, berührenden Klangwelt, die in ihrer Einfachheit unerwartete Tiefen hat und eine Fülle an Emotionen sowie sehr persönlichen Gedanken hervorruft.
It was not until 15 years after its premiere that Henryk Gorecki’s Third Symphony achieved worldwide popularity. A recording with the London Sinfonietta catapulted the work into the pop charts. Classical purists turned up their noses at this. Anything that tops the commercial charts cannot be good!
The composer and his Symphony of Sorrowful Songs were repeatedly confronted with this prejudice – except perhaps in his home country, where the work has been recorded several times. The last Polish recording was made in 2019 under the baton of Gorecki’s compatriot and contemporary Krzysztof Penderecki.
Now Krzysztof Urbanski and the Warsaw Philharmonic have taken on this formally unusual symphony – three slow movements in a minimalist sound language based almost exclusively on multiple divided strings.
The three movements are marked tranquillo – calm. And this is how Krzysztof Urbanski shapes this work: a gently flowing stream of sounds whose play of colors the listener cannot – and does not want to – escape. The timbre of three different soprano voices blends into this intense, emotionally engaging performance. Krzysztof Urbanski has succeeded in employing a subtle dramaturgical trick here. He gives the three lamentations a very individual, personal touch.
This recording impressively refutes the many reservations about Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony. Krzysztof Urbanski and his musicians allow us to participate in a special, touching world of sound, which in its simplicity has unexpected depths and evokes a wealth of emotions and very personal thoughts.
