Kennedy Center, Washington

How are audience members thinking about attending Kennedy Center events now that Trump has taken it over? A large number is boycotting events at the KC. Here are comments that we found in the Internet.

« Personally, completely out of the question for the next 4 years. »

« Nope. Not. DC has plenty of other arts venues. »

« We have rescinded our yearly membership and will not renew our theater subscription. We will not have the shows we see dictated to us by a would be Fuhrer!

« The people that enjoy the performing arts aren’t the bro culture MAGA crowd in the navy yards so that place will be empty for the next 4 yrs

« Average 2-3 performances a year the last 15 years. No chance I am going for at least 4 years. »

« Don’t go. Full boycott. »

« We’re going to step up our attendance at the other amazing venues in town. »

« Support for the Kennedy Center right now is supporting propaganda. Any performance there will have to meet with the regime’s approval and will not be allowed to go forward out of respect for the arts and free artistic expression but for how it can bolster the legitimacy of the Trump administration. There is very much a concerted effort to enforce values and culture using the power of the state and the Kennedy Center is unfortunately low-hanging fruit toward that end. »

« It’s no different than the old Trump hotel. You go, spend money, you are supporting this shit. »

« I’m leaning towards minimizing attendance and possibly only attending things that support ‘disfavored’ artists, if they still happen. So like leaning towards attending Porgy, if it goes forward, but unlikely legally blonde. »

« Trump has big dreams for the Kennedy Center but doesn’t seem to know what it does. »

» My wife and I would go several times a year for date nights. Always Duke’s beforehand, and then we’d walk to the Center and enjoy a cocktail on the terrace as we watched the sun go down over the Potomac. Truly my happy place. But I just don’t have the heart to step back in there. »
