Dieses Album hat das Potenzial, die Geister zu erregen, im Positiven wie im Negativen. Die einen werden mögen, was Vestard Shimkus mit den Diabelli-Variationen macht (fast hätte ich gesagt: anstellt), andere werden es als skandalös empfinden.

Ich für meinen Teil habe mich dabei gut amüsiert. Ich finde, dass Shimkus so viele Einfälle umsetzt, manches so überspitzt humorvoll und durchtrieben formuliert, dass man Beethovens Werk neu entdeckt. Unerwartete Rhythmen, neuartige Akzente, düsteres Grollen (sehr oft) und dann wieder feinster Lyrismus: die Diabelli-Variationen werden so zu einem formidabel kontrastreichen Parcours. Lassen Sie sich überraschen!

This album has the potential to stir up positive and negative emotions. Some will appreciate what Vestard Shimkus does with the Diabelli Variations, while others will find it scandalous.

I enjoyed it very much. Shimkus incorporates so many ideas, some of which are exaggeratedly humorous and cleverly conceived, that you rediscover Beethoven’s work. With unexpected rhythms, novel accents, and dark rumblings, not to mention the finest lyricism, the Diabelli Variations become a journey of formidable contrasts. Let yourself be surprised!
