Der 23-jährige kalifornische Pianist Talon Smith stellt sich als Komponist vor. Stilistisch lässt sich beim Komponisten eine Filiation von Chopin, Liszt und Rachmaninov feststellen. Und wenn Smith auch keine eigene individuelle Sprache gefunden hat, so mangelt es ihm nicht an Ideen. Die Sonate hat er damit reichlich gefüllt, wobei mehrere Themen im Laufe der Sonate immer wieder auftauchen. Das alles ist angenehm zu hören, und der ganze Reichtum der Musik offenbart sich einem eigentlich nur, wenn man die Sonate mehrmals anhört.
Talon, der im Alter von 14 Jahren die Goldmedaille beim Internationalen Gina Bachauer Klavierwettbewerb gewann, ist auch ein abwechslungsreicher Präludienzyklus gelungen. Die Stücke dauern zwischen 40 Sekunden und 2 Minuten und haben charakteristische Titel wie Turbulento, Misterioso, Feroce, Temeramente, Ecstatico, Dolente, Sognante… Der Zyklus ist durchaus interessant zu hören, und es gibt einige wirklich gute Miniaturen darin, langsame Stücke, die viel cantabile verlangen, und schnelle, die für den Interpreten sicherlich eine Herausforderung darstellen.
Und daher muss man neben dem einfallsreichen Komponisten auch dem Pianisten Smith wegen seiner hoch musikalischen und technisch beeindruckenden Darbietungen Achtung zollen. Er verfügt bei immer guter Phrasierung über ein beeindruckendes Arsenal an Farben, dynamischen Nuancen und Tempomodulationen, die sein Spiel kommunikativ spannend machen.

It is all pleasant to listen to, and the full richness of the music only becomes apparent when the sonata is heard several times.
Talon, who won the gold medal at the International Gina Bachauer Piano Competition at the age of 14, has also created a varied cycle of preludes. The pieces last between 40 seconds and 2 minutes and have characteristic titles such as Turbulento, Misterioso, Feroce, Temeramente, Ecstatico, Dolente, Sognante… The cycle is quite interesting to listen to and there are some really good miniatures in it, slow pieces that require a lot of cantabile and fast ones that certainly present a challenge to the performer.
And so, in addition to the imaginative composer, the pianist Smith must also be commended for his highly musical and technically impressive performances. He has an impressive arsenal of colors, dynamic nuances, and tempo modulations that make his playing communicatively exciting.
