Der mexikanische Komponist Silvestre Revueltas komponierte 1934 und 1935 die Musik zu dem halbdokumentarischen Film Redes (Netze), der von den Bemühungen ausgebeuteter Fischer in dem kleinen Dorf Alvarado handelt, sich gegen den sie ausbeutenden Unternehmer zusammenzuschließen.

Revueltas arrangierte eine Konzertfassung dieser Musik, und auch der Dirigent Erich Kleiber schuf eine Suite, die sehr erfolgreich wurde. Auf dieser CD erklingt die gesamte Filmmusik, die gut 34 Minuten dauert.

Die vitale und ungemein farbige, sehr narrative Musik wird unter der Leitung von Angel Gil-Ordonez hervorragend gespielt.

Der sozialpolitische Film The City, zu dem Aaron Copland 1939 die Musik schrieb, ist ein reiner Dokumentarfilm, der die  Notlage der Stadtbewohner gegen Ende der Depression schildert und wurde als « ein lebhaftes Plädoyer für Stadtplanung und Wohnungsbau » bezeichnet.

 

Der Film zeigt am Anfang ein ländliches Leben in New England, danach die hektische Industriestadt Pittsburgh, das gigantisch wachsende Manhatten und die endlosen Staus, die es schon 1939 in New York gab. Am Schluss steht, bemerkenswert für 1939, das Plädoyer für The Green City.

Coplands Partitur ist sehr atmosphärisch und unterstützt die Aussagekraft der Bilder mit einer nicht weniger aussagekräftigen, quasi argumentierenden Musik. So entstand eine wunderbare, sehr originelle und nachhaltig wirkende Partitur, die auf dieser CD in einer sehr eindringlichen Interpretation zu hören ist und auch unabhängig vom Bild, wie die Musik von Revueltas, zu einer großartigen Tondichtung wird.

In 1934 and 1935, Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas composed the music for the semi-documentary film Redes (Nets), about the efforts of exploited fishermen in the small village of Alvarado to unite against the entrepreneur who exploited them.

Revueltas arranged a concert version of this music and conductor Erich Kleiber also created a suite that became very successful. This CD features the entire score, which lasts a good 34 minutes.

The vital and immensely colorful, very narrative music is superbly played under the direction of Angel Gil-Ordonez.

The socio-political film The City, for which Aaron Copland wrote the music in 1939, is a documentary-only film depicting the plight of city dwellers near the end of the Depression and has been called « a spirited plea for urban planning and housing. »

 

The film begins by showing rural life in New England, then the hectic industrial city of Pittsburgh, the gigantic growth of Manhattan, and the endless traffic jams that already existed in New York in 1939. At the end, remarkably for 1939, is the plea for The Green City.

Copland’s score is highly atmospheric and supports the expressiveness of the images with no less expressive, quasi-argumentative music. The result is a wonderful, highly original score with a lasting effect, which can be heard on this CD in a very haunting interpretation. Listened to without the movie pictures, it becomes, like the music of Revueltas,  a magnificent tone poem.
