Charles Dutoit

An interesting piece of information about Charles Dutoit and his tenure as Music Director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra shows that beyond the recent allegations of sexual harassment Dutoit seems to have been a champion in verbal and psychological harassment against the musicians.

Dutoit became the artistic director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (OSM) in 1977 and resigned in April 2002, with immediate effect, after the Québec Musicians Guild complained about what it called Dutoit’s « offensive behaviour and complete lack of respect for the musicians ». At that time, sexual harassment was not mentioned.
