Louise Renée de Penancoët de Keroual (1649-1734), Duchess of Portsmouth and Aubigny, was the mistress of the English King Charles II for about 15 years and at the same time secret agent of the French King Louis XIV. She was also culturally active and created close links between musicians on both sides of the English Channel. The repertoire that resulted inspired Ensemble Leviathan and Lucile Tessier to create this CD.

With expressivity and elegance, the performers accurately portray the zeitgeist of the French and English aristocracies of the late 17th century against the historical backdrop of the Treaty of Dover. The program is often marked by cheerfulness or, on the other hand, melancholy, but contains only music inspired by genuine esprit with pleasing and original melodies, which become attractive in the extremely stylish and sonorous interpretations.

Thus, this CD is a thoroughly enjoyable listen, illustrating both the pageantry and inwardness of the time of Louis XIV and Charles II.
