British soprano Heather Harper died yesterday (22 April 2019), aged 88. Born in Belfast, she received her early musical training in her hometown and later in London. She was initially a mezzo-soprano, and sang firstly in choirs.

Her solo debut came in 1954 in Macbeth at the Oxford University Opera Club. From 1956 to 1975, she was a member of the English Opera Group. She appeared also at Covent Garden, Bayreuth, San Francisco, the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires and also had an extensive concert career and made numerous recordings.
