Mark Elder
(c) Hallé Orchestra

It was announced today that Sir Mark Elder has renewed his contract with the Hallé. This will see Sir Mark’s tenure as Music Director extend until at least 2020. Sir Mark was first appointed in 2000 and the new agreement will make him the longest serving Music Director currently working with a major English symphony orchestra, and the only English conductor to hold such a post.

Sir Mark Elder commented: « I am, of course, delighted to continue making music with my wonderful orchestra. The Hallé, together with its loyal audience, holds a special place in my heart, and I am excited at the thought of what we will achieve as the years go by. » The renewal is seen as important both for the continued artistic vision and quality of performance of the Orchestra itself, but also for the broader cultural life of the city of Manchester.
