The Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA) – a partnership between the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music – has now kicked off its worldwide student admission process for the 2019 academic year.

Applicants will take part in two rounds of auditions in March 2019, and classes will start for selected students in September 2019. Over the course of the following two years, students will be mentored by professors and professional musicians from the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, and will be given numerous opportunities to perform.

During each academic year, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra provides each student at least 4 to 5 concert opportunities. In the past years, several groups of students performed side-by-side with musicians in other professional orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony, the European Union Youth Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the China Philharmonic, and the Hangzhou Philharmonic.

They also will audition for internship placements with internationally renowned orchestras including the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, in addition to earning a Master of Fine Arts degree upon graduation.

Nearly all students receive job offers during their two years of study or advance to higher career positions upon completion of the program. The employment rate of the inaugural class of the SOA was 100%.

Established by Long Yu, Music Director of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, in September 2014, the SOA has just begun the process for its sixth year of admissions.
