In the past two years Jonas Erni (*1974) has composed his six fantasies for solo violin and now presents them in this recording. The four accompanying texts, Intermezzi palandi, spoken by Michael Schwendimann, are intended to make the ideas and structures behind the pieces more comprehensible to the audience. In the two to four minute long contributions, these atmospheric images, which also present colors and emotions, are also presented with the help of audio examples. For example, the second piece, Flow, i.e. in psychology the feeling of a mental state of complete immersion experienced as blissful, is described and shown in stages of the still outstanding immersion up to the ecstatic.
Since the six moods are quite different in nature, the works also offer different kinds of tonaly images. In the process, the character of the composer and violinist can also be discerned, who in his life loves the manageable rather than the surprising. Thus his pieces always develop out of a cell in a comprehensible flow.
Erni, who is also active in Switzerland as a concertmaster and chamber musician, was able to cultivate his compositional side in the Corona pandemic. His works are characterized by structures that are audible to the senses and discreetly incorporate modern sound. The scores, which are peppered with playing instructions – musical examples in the booklet show this – offer Erni, as an accomplished instrumentalist and as the creator of the works, the best opportunity to make his intentions heard, but they are also aids for other violinists who want to play the works. Erni, in any case, has mastered his pieces technically, mentally and emotionally, and is thus able to make the whole range of desired emotions resound.
