Russian bass Alexander Vedernikov is dead, his son, conductor Alexander Vedernikov told Russian media. Alexander Vedernikov Sr. was born on December 23, 1927 in the village of Mokinino in the Kirov region. After he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1955, he was soloist of the Leningrad Kirov Theatre of Opera and Ballet (now Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg). He won First Prize at the International Schumann Competition in Berlin in 1956.

In 1958, Alexander Vedernikov joined the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. From 2006 to 2009, he was a vocal consultant at the same house. In 2008, he has was named artistic director of the Moscow-based Russkaya Opera Theatre.

The singer also toured extensively abroad, and sang La Scala. His discography includes more than 30 albums.
