This new disc from LSO Live combines classical and jazz with music by Bernstein, Stravinsky and Golijov. Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs for solo clarinet and jazz ensemble, was premiered by Al Gallodoro in 1955. The exuberance of the music, with its big band character, is expressed by Simon Rattle with soloist Chris Richards in a rhythmically and tonally sharp, absolutely ravishing performance.
The LSO’s first clarinetist, Chris Richards, is also the soloist in Stravinsky’s Ebony Concerto, in which he and his LSO colleagues provide a fascinating interpretation under Rattle’s precise direction.
Nazareno is a piece for two pianos and band for which young Venezuelan percussionist, producer and composer Gonzalo Grau used themes from Pasión según San Marcos by Argentine Osvaldo Golijov.
The piece, which Katia and Marielle Labèque have performed in many concert halls since its 2010 premiere, brings the richness of Afro-Caribbean and Latin American influences well to the fore. Rattle, the LSO and the Labèques give this music all the power, precision and stirring intensity it needs to be unforgettable.
