Diese CD enthält 7 Kompositionen der britisch-polnischen Komponistin Roxana Panufnik. Private Joe besteht aus zwei Briefen, die der Soldat ‘Private Joe’ vom Schlachtfeld in Ypres an seine Schwester schrieb, und drei Kriegsgedichten. Tragik des Todgeweihten und scherzhafter schwarzer Humor vermischen sich zu einem ergreifenden Kriegs-Klangbild, welches das Sacconi Quartett und der herausragend gestaltende Bariton Roderick Williams unmittelbar wirkungsvoll werden lassen. Das elegisch melancholische Bratschensolostück Canto garantiert einen stimmungsvoll passenden Übergang zu Letters from Burma (2004) für Oboe and Streichquartett, inspiriert von der heute umstrittenen birmanischen Politikerin Aung San Suu Kyi. Es ist ein stimmungsvolles, lokal gefärbtes Stück über ein Volkslied. Ebenfalls lokal geprägt ist das spannende Stück Hora Bessarabia, basierend auf rumänischer Zigeunermusik mit bulgarischem Zigeunerrhythmus, für Violine und Kontrabass.
Cantator & Amanda wurde 2011 für die Besetzungen Fagott und Streichquartett oder Streichorchester komponiert. Es ist, laut Werknotiz, ein dramatisches Werk, inspiriert von einer alten Legende über die zum Scheitern verurteilte Liebe zwischen einem Mönch und einem einheimischen Mädchen.
Ein trauriges Fagottsolo leitet das Werk ein, das auch zarte und stimmungsvolle Liebesmusik enthält, ehe die Musik dramatisch und verzweifelt hoffnungslos wird, « als der unglückliche Kantor seinen Verstand und sein Leben verliert und lebendig in den Klostermauern eingemauert wird. » Darauf folgt ein berührendes Fagottsolo. Ein starkes Stück, sehr ausdrucksvoll und klangmalerisch!
Die stimmungsvolle Komposition Second Home für Klavier, Streichquartett und Sopran führt zum letzten Werk der CD, und da kommt dann der auf dem Cover abgebildete Bär ins Spiel. Heartfelt ist eine musikalische Bearbeitung des Herzschlags eines jungen Braunbären namens Albie, aufgenommen mit einem digitalen Stethoskop im Zoo von Bristol. Albie selbst ist auf dem Frontcover des Albums abgebildet. Der erste Satz, Usbekische Prozession, basiert auf der Tanzmusik usbekischer Hofmusiker aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, während der zweite Satz, Lament for a Bulgarian Dancing Bear, den realen Rhythmus und das Muster von Albies Herzschlags sowie Elemente der bulgarischen Volksmusik verwendet. Das Ganze ist nicht nur originell, sondern auch musikalisch spannend, eloquent und dementsprechend attraktiv.
Und so fügt sich das ganze Programm zusammen als monographische CD einer äußerst interessanten Komponistin.
This CD contains 7 compositions by British-Polish composer Roxana Panufnik. Private Joe consists of two letters written by a soldier from the WW1 battlefield in Ypres to his sister and three war poems. The tragedy of the doomed man and jocular black humor mingle to create a poignant wartime sound picture that the Sacconi Quartet and the outstanding baritone Roderick Williams make immediately effective. The elegiac, melancholy viola solo piece Canto guarantees an appropriate atmospheric transition to Letters from Burma (2004) for oboe and string quartet, inspired by the now controversial Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi. It is an atmospheric, locally colored piece about a folk song. Also locally influenced is the exciting piece Hora Bessarabia, based on Romanian gypsy music with Bulgarian gypsy rhythm, for violin and double bass.
Cantator & Amanda was composed in 2011 for bassoon and string quartet or string orchestra. It is, according to the work note, a dramatic work inspired by an ancient legend about the doomed love between a monk and a girl called Amanda.
A mournful bassoon solo introduces the work, which also contains tender and atmospheric love music, before the music becomes dramatic and desperately hopeless « as the unfortunate monk loses his mind and his life and is enclosed alive in the monastery walls. » This is followed by a moving bassoon solo. A strong piece, very expressive and suggestive!
The atmospheric composition Second Home for piano, string quartet and soprano leads to the final work on the CD, and that’s where the bear pictured on the cover comes in. Heartfelt is a musical arrangement of the heartbeat of a young brown bear named Albie, recorded with a digital stethoscope at Bristol Zoo. Albie himself is featured on the album’s front cover. The first movement, Uzbek Procession, is based on the dance music of 17th-century Uzbek court musicians, while the second movement, Lament for a Bulgarian Dancing Bear, uses the real rhythm and pattern of Albie’s heartbeat as well as elements of Bulgarian folk music. The whole work is not only original, but also musically exciting, eloquent and accordingly attractive.
And so this varied program comes together as a monographic CD of an extremely interesting composer.
