Philippe Hersant’s Ephémères take us to Japan, as the 24 pieces are inspired by the so-called haiku, short Japanese poems. The composer, born in Rome in 1948, wrote these works between 1999 and 2003. Far from any avant-garde music, the Ephémères belong rather to French impressionism. Sandra Chamoux plays the pieces, which last between half a minute and almost five minutes, with a fine feeling for the poetry of the music. The texts on which the suite was written are printed in the booklet.
With his Images, Claude Debussy broke with the traditional models of 19th century music. The first Image, Reflets dans l’eau, suggests a world of flow without being overly descriptive. With the exception of Mouvement and, to a lesser extent, Poissons d’Or, the same is true of the other Images, in which the search for form is combined with the intimate vision of the author.
Sandra Chamoux has recreated the lightness of Debussy’s sound world without abusing color effects. Her interpretations are clear, internalized and dreamy, altogether enchanting, even if one could wish for Mouvement to be a bit clearer and rhythmically more sharply accented. On the whole, however, this is a coherent, well-played album with compositions that match each other.
