As reported, the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna is in danger of being abolished by the Austrian broadcaster’s ORF austerity plans. Noe a petition has been launched: « It is an indispensable symphony orchestra within the Austrian cultural scene, dedicated primarily to the cultivation and performance of new music as well as lesser-known works of the 19th and 20th centuries. It’s existence is of immense importance to contemporary Austrian composers. As a highly esteemed and flexible orchestra, the RSO Vienna is an integral part of the concert and opera landscape throughout Austria. Almost all concerts of the RSO Vienna are broadcast on Ö1 and are thus available to all Austrians. The orchestra is therefore also an important part of public value and fulfills ORF’s educational mandate.
A country like Austria which has such a rich musical heritage cannot afford the disbanding of the RSO Vienna. This petition solicits funding for the continued existence of the RSO. »
