Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphonien Nr. 4 & 6; London Symphony Orchestra, Antonio Pappano; 1 SACD LSO Live 0867; Aufnahmen 2019/2020, Veröffentlichung 04/2021 (UK, US, F), 07.05.2021(D) – 68'06) – Rezension von Remy Franck

Antonio Pappano und das London Symphony Orchestra steigen mit voller Kraft und Dramatik in Vaughan Williams’ Vierte Symphonie ein und überwältigen den Zuhörer mit mächtigen Klängen. Aber im Drama gib es auch Ruhe und helleres Licht. Das alles bringt Pappano mit einem inspirierten und engagierten Dirigat zum Ausdruck.  Im Booklet schreibt der Dirigent, die Aufnahme sei am Abend der britischen Parlamentswahlen 2019 gemacht worden, und die dadurch entstandene Stimmung von Anspannung und das Bewusstsein eines politischen Konflikts habe das Drama der Musik geschärft. Der Hörer kann das nicht widerlegen. Diese Vierte ist unmittelbar bedrohlich.

Die 1947 komponierte Sechste Symphonie des Komponisten ist stark vom Zweiten Weltkrieg geprägt, streckenweise sehr heftig, aber auch melancholisch.

Auch für diese sehr spannende Interpretation liefert Pappano im Textheft den Kontext: Die Sechste wurde nur einen Tag vor der Ankündigung, dass alle Konzerthäuser aufgrund von Covid-19 geschlossen werden sollten, aufgenommen. Der Gedanke an die Schließung « inspirierte die vereinten Kräfte des LSO, ihr Äußerstes zu geben, dem heimtückischen Virus die sprichwörtliche Faust entgegenzuhalten. » Pappano lässt die Musik in ungezügelter Dramatik und mit viel Energie erklingen. Sie wird so, genau wie die Vierte, sehr wirkungsvoll und packend und im Vergleich mit anderen Aufnahmen schneiden beide sehr gut ab. Sie gehören zu den besten!

Antonio Pappano and the London Symphony Orchestra launch Vaughan Williams’ Fourth Symphony with full force and drama, overwhelming the listener straight away with powerful sounds. But in the drama there is also calm and brighter light. Pappano brings all this out with an inspired and committed conducting.  In the booklet, the conductor writes that the recording was made on the evening of the 2019 British election, and the resulting mood of tension and awareness of a political conflict sharpened the music’s drama. The listener cannot refute that, for this Fourth is immediately threatening.
Composed in 1947, the composer’s Sixth Symphony is strongly influenced by World War II, very violent in places, but also melancholy.
Pappano also provides context for this very exciting interpretation in the text booklet: the Sixth was recorded just one day before the announcement that all concert halls were to be closed due to Covid-19. The thought of closure inspired « the combined forces of the LSO to give their utmost, to hold a proverbial fist up to the insidious virus. » Pappano lets the music ring out with unbridled drama and energy. It thus becomes, just like the Fourth, very effective and gripping, and in comparison with other recordings both score very well. They are among the best!
