British conductor and early music specialist Harry Bicket has been appointed chief conductor of Santa Fe Opera, starting in October 2013. He is the successor to Frédéric Chaslin, who resigned in August 2012 after two seasons, explaining he wanted to focus on composing and his job as music director of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. American composer William Bolcom (*1938) is scandalized that US politicians bowed to pressure from the National Rifle Association after the call for stronger gun control legislation. The Internet and many Amercian newspapers are widely reporting about his song « Aren’t You Ashamed? » Bolcom wrote it on April 18, one day after 45 senators defeated a series of modest proposals to curb the kind of gun violence that led to the slaughter of twenty elementary school kids… Bravo Mr. Bolcom!


Die Nebenkosten waren nicht berücksichtigt worden, als vor einigen Wochen der ‘Globalpauschalfestpreis’ von 575 Millionen Euro genannt wurde, für den Hochtief den skandalös teuren Hamburger Konzertsaal bis 2016 fertig bauen soll. Nun nannte Bürgermeister Olaf Scholz (SPD) einen Preis von 789 Millionen Euro, in dem sämtliche Nebenkosten enthalten seien. Dieser Preis ist zehnmal so hoch wie ursprünglich geplant, als das Projekt noch mit rund 77 Millionen veranschlagt wurde. Dass die Kritik an der Elbphilharmonie immer heftiger wird, ist selbstverständlich. Der Imageschaden, der dem klassischen  Musikbetrieb dadurch bei Leuten erwächst, die ohnehin die Klassik als elitären Luxus ansehen, ist enorm.
