Johann Simon Mayr: Klavierkonzerte Nr. 1 & 2; Joseph Haydn: Symphonie Nr. 25 C-Dur; Edna Stern, Klavier, Georgisches Kammerorchester Ingolstadt, Ruben Gazarian; 1 SACD Ars Produktion 38294; Aufnahme 04/2019, Veröffentlichung 08/11/2019 (o.A.)

As a contemporary of Haydn, Beethoven and Rossini, Johann Simon Mayr, born in 1763, was one of the most famous opera composers around 1800. His works were performed in cities such as Rome and Milan, London and Paris, Vienna and Lisbon. He is regarded as the ‘father of Italian opera’. Napoleon offered him the opera director position in Paris. Constanze Mozart asked him to train her son, and Gaetano Donizetti was Mayr’s most famous pupil. When Mayr died in Bergamo in 1845, Giuseppe Verdi, Vinzenzo Bellini and Gioacchino Rossini paid their last respects to him.
The recording catalogues show above all operas and vocal works, but hardly symphonic music. It is therefore all the more welcome that the Belgian-Israeli pianist Edna Stern and the Georgian Chamber Orchestra Ingolstadt perform two piano concertos under Ruben Gazarian. After the Tactus CD with Piero Barbareschi, this is only the second recording of these works (and not the first as stated on the back cover).
These are two works that leave no doubt that one is dealing with an opera composer. Edna Stern ‘stages’ them accordingly, while Ruben Gazarian builds up a richly decorated stage around the piano playing.
