Magical Chopin; Frédéric Chopin: Mazurkas Nr. 30-32 op. 50 + Ballade Nr. 1 op. 23 + Nocturnes Nr. 8 op. 27/2  &  Nr. 14 op. 48/2; Scherzo Nr. 2 op. 31; Valses Nr. 1, 4, 19 + Polonaise Nr. 6 op. 53 (Héroïque); Rafal Mokrzycki, Klavier; 1 CD Dux 1558; Aufnahme 12/2018, Veröffentlichung 08/2019 (61'02) – Rezension von Remy Franck

With a sophisticated culture of touch Polish pianist Rafal Mokrzycki can produce a beautiful sound and make Chopin magical whenever delicate floating melodies in the music allow it. The drama in the First Ballad is less successful, and the Second Scherzo seems somewhat artificial. The Mazurkas and the Nocturnes are played very beautifully, and Mokrzycki can also get a lot of charm and a great lightness from the waltzes. The Polonaise Héroïque, on the other hand, is somewhat stilted and lacks tension and consistent agogics. And so this Chopin program is very uneven. I had imagined a CD with the title ‘Magical Chopin’ differently.
