The Jury for the third edition of the Evgeny Svetlanov Competition, held in Paris, decided to not award a first prize. Lio Kuokman from Macao, China, recently appointed assistant conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, won second prize. A British viola player and conductor, Sam Burstin, came third. Not convinced at all by the finalists, Myun-Wung Chung and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the competition orchestra, decided not to name an assistant conductor out of the winning team, as it was planned. It must have been a weak contest!
