Für die die dritte Folge im Mahler-Zyklus mit den Essener Philharmonikern hat Chefdirigent Tomas Netopil die zweite Symphonie ausgewählt. Der erste Satz ist in gemäßigtem Tempo sehr detailfreudig und überrascht hin und wieder mit besonders schön elaborierten Streicherbewegungen. Mit der schlichten Art, wie Netopil das Andante comodo angeht, wirklich gemächlich und anmutig, erreicht er mehr als andere Dirigenten. Auch im restlichen Verlauf der Symphonie hat man nie den Eindruck, dass die Musik dramatisiert wird, sie kann sich vielmehr völlig frei entfalten, ohne jeden Zwang, ohne jede Überschwänglichkeit, dabei immer sehr lyrisch, mit dem Ausdruck einer tiefen, ehrlichen Empfindung. Die die Essener Philharmoniker und der Chor aus Prag stellen ihren hohen Rang eindrucksvoll unter Beweis. Die beiden Solistinnen passen sich Netopils Auffassung mit mehr oder weniger guten Leistungen an.
Die Tonaufnahme ist gut, räumlich und transparent.
For the third installment in the Mahler cycle with the Essen Philharmonic, principal conductor Tomas Netopil has chosen the Second Symphony. The first movement is very detailed in moderate tempo and surprises now and then with particularly beautifully elaborated string movements. With the unpretentious way Netopil approaches the Andante comodo, truly leisurely and graceful, he achieves more than other conductors. Even in the rest of the symphony one never has the impression that the music is dramatized; rather, it can unfold completely freely, without any constraint, without any exuberance, yet always very lyrical, with the expression of deep, honest feeling. The Essen Philharmonic Orchestra and the choir from Prague impressively demonstrate their high rank. The two soloists adapt to Netopil’s conception with more or less good performances.
The sound recording is good, spacious and transparent.
