Der 1958 geborene deutsche Komponist und Musikwissenschaftler Joachim Brügge hat eine enge Verbindung zur amerikanischen Musik. Das äußert sich in seinem Stück In the Spirit of Freedom für Trompete, Tenor und Orchester, mit Texten von Walt Whitman.
Das zweite Stück, In the Spirit of Brahms, für Mundharmonika und Orchester, ist eine Hommage an diesen Komponisten, mit klanglichen Anleihen in dessen Musik, ohne dass das humorvoll kecke Stück auch nur annähernd wie Brahms klingen würde.
In the Spirit of History ist Stück ist ein musikalischer Rückblick, für den Griegs Aus Holbergs Zeit Pate stand. Die Komposition In the Spirit of Fairy Tales nimmt Motive aus der Kalevala-Dichtung als Ausgangspunkt, eine Dichtung, die ja bereits Jean Sibelius inspirierte.
So enthält denn dieses Album ein vielseitiges Programm und eine interessante musikalische Reise, die von den Interpreten mit viel Gespür für das Raffinement von Brügges Musik inszeniert wird.
German composer and musicologist Joachim Brügge, born in 1958, has a close connection to American music. This is obvious in his piece In the Spirit of Freedom for trumpet, tenor and orchestra, with texts by Walt Whitman.
The second piece, In the Spirit of Brahms, for harmonica and orchestra, is a homage to this composer, with tonal borrowings from his music, without the humorously cheeky piece sounding anything like Brahms.
In the Spirit of History is a musical retrospective inspired by Grieg’s From Holberg’s Time. The composition In the Spirit of Fairy Tales takes motifs from the Kalevala poem as its starting point, a poem that already inspired Jean Sibelius.
This album thus contains a varied program and an interesting musical journey, which is staged by the performers with a keen sense of the sophistication of Brügge’s music.
