Marcello Abbado, pianist and composer, brother of Claudio Abbado and father of the conductor Roberto Abbado, died in Stresa on 4 June. He was born on October 7, 1926.

A pupil of Ghedini and Gavazzeni, he was president of the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan from 1973 to 1996. In the same years he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Teatro alla Scala. He has taught composition at the Conservatories of Bologna, Parma, and Piacenza. In 1993 he founded with Vladimir Delman the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, of which he was artistic director from 1993 to 1996.

As a pianist he toured all over the world including halls such as the Musikverein in Vienna, the Moscow Conservatory and the Salle Gaveau. His compositions include ballets, stage music, orchestral and chamber music.
