Man muss bis zum letzten Satz (Der hölzerne Esel) der Streichersonate von Carlos Gomes (1836-1896) warten, um nach drei charmanten, aber nicht wirklich substantiellen Sätzen, in den Genuss einer charakteristischen Musik zu kommen.
In der Suite Antiga von Alberto Nepomuceno (1864-1920) ist die Aria reizvoll und auch die Serenata ist recht gefällig. In der Suite à Antiga von Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902) ist ebenfalls die Aria am beeindruckendsten, und so bleibt unter dem Strich nicht genügend attraktive Musik, um eine Empfehlung für diese CD auszusprechen, nicht zuletzt weil das English Chamber Orchestra nicht viel mehr tut als Pflichtarbeit.
One has to wait until the last movement (The Wooden Donkey) of the String Sonata by Carlos Gomes (1836-1896) to enjoy some characteristic music after three charming but not really substantial movements.
In the Suite Antiga by Alberto Nepomuceno (1864-1920), the Aria is delightful and the Serenata is also quite pleasing. In the Suite à Antiga by Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902) it is also the Aria that is most impressive, and so the bottom line is that there is not enough attractive music to make a recommendation for this CD, not least because the English Chamber Orchestra does little more than duty work.
