Lahav Shani (34) has decided not to renew his contract as Principal Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Pending approval by the Munich City Council next Wednesday, the Israeli, who took office in Rotterdam in 2018, is moving to Munich. The Munich Philharmonic had been without a conductor since last year after it severed ties with Valery Gergiev. Shani’s contract in Rotterdam runs until 2026.
Shani has also been chief of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra since 2020.
