The brilliant and finely differentiated interpretations received very good reviews when first released. Pizzicato reviewers did not question the music’s appeal, noting that the Danubius Quartet plays with warmth and abandon throughout. The sound is excellent, as are David Nelson’s notes, so any friend of good chamber music can add this box to their discotheque. (Marco Polo 8.206006) -♪♪♪♪♪

– Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro I (1798-1834) became known not only as a monarch, but also as a composer.
–  The name Conlon Nancarrow (1912-1997) is inseparably linked with his more than 50 studies for player pianos, i.e. for electromechanical self-playing pianos into whose music rolls he punched his compositions directly. The paper strips with which he controlled the mechanics of these pianos are comparable to the punched strips in old computers. This enabled him to realize new structures in terms of rhythm, meter, and tempo that went far beyond what a pianist was capable of playing manually. MDG now releases the complete studies in a five-CD box set (they were previously available individually), recorded on a Bösendorfer and a Fisher grand piano each with the Ampico Player Piano Mechanism.
–  Bjarte Eike and his Barokksolistene take us to the London entertainment scene of the Restoration on the CD The Playhouse Sessions. Arranged music by Purcell and Dowland, dances from Playford’s Dancing Master, shanties, reels and ballads are interpreted by the Norwegian fiddler Bjarte Eike and his Barokksolistene, in a colorful mix in which baroque, jazz and folk styles mingle. Eike’s own compositions to texts from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream are also included on the CD. This results in the atmosphere of dances and theatrical songs that Londoners enjoyed in the taverns and alehouses when Cromwell’s Puritan restrictions were abolished. This guarantees a most enjoyable hour of music. (Rubicon RCD 1096) – ♪♪♪♪

Enttäuschende Hommage an Cherkassy
– American-Ukrainian pianist Shura Cherkassy performs Saint-Saëns’ 2nd Piano Concerto and Liszt’s First with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Norman Del Mar and Simon Rattle on a CD from ICA Classics. The interpretations are typical Cherkassy, brilliantly powerful and sonorous. Unfortunately, in both cases the piano is very poor in sound and the orchestra sounds no better. In addition, the program comprises Beethoven’s Eroica Variations recorded in London, which I do not like much in their harshness and lack of differentiation. So, this is a more than disappointing tribute to a great pianist who deserved better. (ICA Classics ICAC5168) – ♪♪
