Alexander Paley spielt sein ganzes Rachmaninov-Programm sehr virtuos und sachlich, fein nuanciert in den ruhigeren Stücken oder auch mit kraftvoll gehämmerten Akkorden. Technisch ist das alles beeindruckend, interessant sind auch die Phrasierungen, die Erarbeitung der Strukturen, aber im Großen und Ganzen wirkt Paleys Spiel kühl und nicht wirklich poetisch oder kantabel. Dieser Eindruck wird verstärkt durch ein sehr metallisch, nicht wirklich schön und warm klingendes Klavier. Nach Trifonov und Osokins ist dieser Ausflug zu Rachmaninov doch sehr enttäuschend.

Alexander Paley’s performance of this entire Rachmaninov programme is very virtuosic and straightforward, finely nuanced in the quieter pieces or also with powerfully hammered chords. Technically, all this is impressive, the phrasings, the elaboration of the structures are certainly interesting, but on the whole, Paley’s playing seems cool and not really poetic or cantabile. This impression is reinforced by a very metallic, not really beautiful and warm sounding piano. After Trifonov and Osokins, this excursion to Rachmaninov is very disappointing.
