The interior of the main hall after the fire

As Pizzicato already reported, a huge fire, whose cause is not yet known, destroyed much of the early-20th century National Philharmonic building in Chisinau, the Moldavian capital. The chief conductor and artistic director of the Symphony Orchestra at the National Philharmonic, Mihail Agafita, wrote on Facebook that the fire had consumed everything, including the musical instruments and the complete musical library with all the scores and orchestral parts.

President Dodon inspected the site on Friday morning and promised to start rebuilding it in March 2021, calling on the people of the country and on the external partners of Moldova to help.

Moldavian violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja said: « It’s like when a whole part of our national biography has been destroyed in flames and disappeared forever in the smoke of the past. It is devastating. »
