Rick Stotijn - Back To Stockhome; Britta Byström: A Walk to Schubert + A Walk to Bruckner + A Walk to Strauss für Viola & Kontrabass + Infinite Rooms für Viola, Kontrabass & Orchester; Eduard Tubin: Kontrabasskonzert; Jesper Nordin: Piano Trio für Violine, Kontrabass & Klavier; Carin Malmlöf-Forssling: In memoriam für Kontrabass; Rick Stotijn (Kontrabass), Malin Bromann (Violine & Viola), Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Västeras Sinfonietta, James Gaffigan, Simon Crawford-Phillips; 1 SACD BIS 2379; Aufnahmen 2018-2020, Veröffentlichung 07.2021 (75'59) – Rezension von Remy Franck

A Walk to Schubert führt zu Schuberts 5. Symphonie, A Walk to Bruckner zu dessen Dritter und A Walk to Strauss zu Don Quixote.

The music on this SACD is mostly rhythmic and often energetic. Only the elegiac In Memoriam by Carin Malmlöf is a quiet piece and, after so much forceful music, ends the program very meditatively.
The most powerful and urgent Double Bass Concerto by Eduard Tubin (1905-1982) also has quiet periods with cantabile solos, but the concerto is a heavyweight simply because of the massive orchestration. Taken as a whole, it is one of the most original of the genre. Rick Stotijn and James Gaffigan balance calm and momentum very well in an engaging and very exciting interpretation.
No less original are Britta Bryström’s three Walks. A Walk to Schubert leads to Schubert’s 5th Symphony, A Walk to Bruckner to his Third, and A Walk to Strauss to Don Quixote. These are lovely works, imaginatively performed by Malin Broman and Rick Stotijn. Jesper Nordin’s Piano Trio with Double Bass and Violin is no less fine a composition, showing more facets of the double bass.
Rick Stotijn is a highly confident performer in all pieces, giving the double bass sound a rare sound quality.
