The Oslo Philharmonic has announced the engagement of Finnish conductor and cellist Klaus Mäkelä (*1996) as Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the orchestra from August 2020.

Mäkelä currently holds the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director of the Turku Music Festival. He is also Artist in Association with the Tapiola Sinfonietta and has conducted leading orchestras in Europe, North America, and Japan. Klaus Mäkelä has signed an initial 3 year contract.

The Oslo Philharmonic’s current Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko, ends his tenure following the orchestra’s 100th anniversary season in the summer of 2020.
