Der spanische Pianist Leopoldo Erice spielt von Johannes Brahms die Werke 116 bis 119. Es ist ein Album, wie es ihrer etliche gibt und eine Werklandschaft erschließt, die zu den schönsten der Klavierwelt gehört.

Erice setzt ganz auf Klarheit der Tonsprache und auf ein schlankes Klangbild. Und obwohl er jede Gefühlsduselei vermeidet, wie man sie on diesen Kompositionen schon gehört hat, bleibt er durchaus nicht nüchtern und kühl. An Herbstfarben mangelt es nicht, ebenso wenig an Nachdenklichkeit.

Das ist alles klug gedacht und überzeugend verwirklicht und ergibt ein breites Tableau an Stimmungen, schwankend zwischen Nostalgie und Resignation sowie auch etwas heiteren Gedanken, was dann alles den einzigartigen Kompositionen von Brahms ihre Intensität gibt.

Erice focuses entirely on clarity of tone and a slender sound. Although he avoids the sentimentalism often found in these compositions, he does not come across as cold and unemotional. There is no shortage of autumnal colors or thoughtfulness.

The result is a broad tableau of moods, fluctuating between nostalgia and resignation, as well as somewhat cheerful thoughts. This gives Brahms’ unique compositions their intensity.
