Kjell Habbestad: String Quartet No. 1, Op. 21 (Quattro stazioni) + String Quartet No. 2, Op. 91 + Clarinet Quintet, Op. 85 (Air d’été suédois) + Divertimento for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 86; Björn Nyman, Klarinette, Sveinung Bjelland, Klavier, Vertavo String Quartet; 1 CD Lawo LWC1193; Aufnahme 2018/2019, Veröffentlichung 05/2020 (71') - Rezension von Remy Franck

For his First String Quartet (1989), Norwegian composer Kjell Habbestad (*1955) uses melodies from four different stations of his travels. They shape the music and its character, so that clearly localizable moods emerge. In the second quartet four different texts determine the music of the four movements. The first movement is about love and the sea, the second, an Adagio, about the night, after Georg Trakl’s Occidental Song, the third, a Scherzo, is based on André Bjerke’s Fun Verses, and the finale takes its inspiration from Paul Celan’s Todesfuge (Death Fugue).
Both quartets are expressive compositions provided here in intense and gripping by the Vertavo String Quartet.
Midsummer days provide the background for the clarinet quintet and its partly flowery, partly gloomy music. The Divertimento for clarinet and piano concludes this monographic CD, which presents a strong figure of the Norwegian music.
