Johann E. Brandl: Symphonie Concertante op. 20 + Symphonie D-Dur; David Castro-Balbi, Violine, Alexandre Castro-Balbi, Cello, Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Kevin Griffith; 1 CD cpo 555 227-2; Aufnahme 04/2018, Veröffentlichung 02/2020 (63’26) - Rezension von Alain Steffen

No, you don’t necessarily have to know these two works. Brandl’s compositions are solid and correspond to the zeitgeist of the early 19th century, but they are not really attractive.
The Symphony might remind you Haydn, but the Symphonie Concertante remains rather pale and insignificant. This is due to the somewhat casual, albeit correctly playing soloists, whose performance is never rousing. Kevin Griffiths’s conducting is dynamic in the Symphony, but does not achieve to make the Symphonie Concertante attractive. The good orchestra does its best. Thus, in the end, we have here a solid overall performance, but it is too little to really get us excited about Johann Evangelist Brandl.
