Jean-Claude Casadesus dirigierte diese Aufnahme von Mahlers Das Lied von der Erde 2008 in der Basilika von Saint-Denis im Norden von Paris. Die Interpretation ist in keiner Hinsicht exzeptionell, und man darf sich fragen, warum sie veröffentlicht werden musste.

Der Tenor Clifton Forbis stemmt sich mehr oder weniger erfolgreich durch die ihm vorbehaltenen Stücke, Violeta Urmana kann zumindest rein vokal gesehen überzeugen, sie singt textverständlich, kann aber den Text letztlich nicht wirklich tiefschürfend gestalten. Auch Casadesus dringt mit einer wachen und klanglich sorgfältig erarbeiteten Interpretation nicht zum Kern der Musik vor. Zu unverbindlich ist das Ganze, zu wenig Tiefe hat die Musik, zu wenig Atem.

Jean-Claude Casadesus conducted this recording of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in 2008 at the Basilica of Saint-Denis in the north of Paris. The interpretation is not exceptional in any respect, and one may wonder why it had to be released.
The tenor Clifton Forbis is forcing himself more or less successfully through the pieces reserved for him, Violeta Urmana is at least convincing from a purely vocal point of view, but, if she is articulating quite well, she cannot really make the text profound and meaningful. Casadesus, too, does not penetrate to the core of the music with an alert and carefully crafted interpretation. The whole is too non-committal, the music has too little depth, too little breath.
