Joana Carneiro has announced that she will step down as the Berkeley Symphony’s music director at the end of the 2017-2018 season and after nine seasons at its artistic helm, the orchestra announced. No explanation is given for the decision, yet it is possibly linked to family reasons. Carneiro gave birth to triplets in 2017 and to a fourth child this year.

Carneiro will stay on as Music Director Emerita of the Berkeley Symphony. Yet, guest conductors have been scheduled to conduct the four symphonic concerts planned for the 2018-2019 season.

The Portuguese conductor succeeded Kent Nagano in the post in 2009.
