Ludwig van Beethoven: Fidelio op. 72; Lise Davidsen (Leonore/Fidelio), Christian Elsner (Florestan), Georg Zeppenfeld (Rocco), Günther Groissböck (Don Fernando), Christina Landshamer (Marzelline), Cornel Frey (Jaquino), Johannes Martin Kränzle (Don Pizzarro), Sächsischer Staatsopernchor Dresden, MDR-Rundfunkchor, Dresdner Philharmonie, Marek Janowski; 2 SACDs Pentatone Classics PTC5186880; Aufnahme 2020, Veröffentlichung 16.7.2021 (109'19) – Rezension von Remy Franck

The quartet in the first act of this Fidelio recording, made under Corona conditions in two periods, is symptomatic of the whole production: it seems merely carefully executed. But the whole recording leaves me perplexed. Janowski simply hurries past the drama and can’t tie the whole thing overarchingly into a real opera either.
Lise Davidsen’s singing is brilliant, but expressively she remains all too cool and reserved. In the dialogues, her German pronunciation is another shortcoming.
Christina Landshamer’s sour-sounding voice, devoid of expression and emotion, does not appeal to me at all for Marzelline.
Florestan is well characterized by Christian Elsner, but his high notes are sometimes harsh, and compared to Davidsen the tenor voice remains too dull and short.
Johannes Martin Kränzle stands out positively as Don Pizarro. His aria ‘Ha! Welch ein Augenblick!’ is a prime example of creative implication.
Georg Zeppenfeld is just as good, vocally as well as in acting, in the role of the jailer Rocco. Cornel Frey can please as one naive-brave Jaquino.
The detailed, transparent playing of the orchestra is remarkable, but technically the orchestra is not completely convincing, especially in the wood section. Corona damage?
In a catalog well filled with excellent Fidelio recordings, this new production definitely has no chance.
