Italian bass Luigi Roni died in Lucca from a virus infection at the age of 78. He made his debut in Spoleto as Mefistofele in Gounod’s Faust. At Milan’s La Scala he sang for the first time in 1968 in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex conducted by Claudio Abbado. He was very often singing at this house and partnered with Montserrat Caballé Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and José Carreras. He also sang at the Vienna State Opera, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and at the Paris Opera. His last role was Simone in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, in April 2019 at the Teatro Carlo-Felice in Genova.
