The International Federation of Musicians has announced that a new regulation for musical instruments on planes is expected to become reality. This would end the discussions between the Federation and the European Union, which started in 2013.

Spurred by the Polish Presidency of the European Union, the file has now been reopened. The Council has finally made its version of the text known following its meeting on June 5, 2025. The FIM says: « We can therefore now expect the imminent adoption of a European regulation recognizing the right for musicians traveling by air to keep their instrument in the cabin, under certain conditions.

Since the Council’s text differs from that adopted by Parliament in February 2014, the procedure will continue with a second reading. We will strive to reintroduce certain elements that Parliament had added at our request and that the Council did not retain. We will of course keep you informed of developments on the file, which we can already consider a significant step forward for all musicians who need to travel by air in the course of their profession. »
