The Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra announced that Chinese-Australian conductor Dane Lam, has been named music director. His contract is starting in July 2023. Lam is the first conductor to hold the position since the orchestra emerged from bankruptcy 11 years ago. He is also Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra. He was the first conductor in the history of Opera Queensland to be honored with an official position when he was appointed their Associate Music Director and Resident Conductor in December 2020.
